ANC supports decision of suspending Police Minster

(MENAFN) The African National Congress (ANC) has expressed full support for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave, describing the move as both “courageous and principled” in the face of serious accusations of wrongdoing.

In a statement issued Monday, the ruling party emphasized that the action reflects a commitment to integrity and accountability. “We welcome and support the President’s decision to place Minister Senzo Mchunu on a leave of absence pending the outcome of the inquiry. This decisive action reaffirms the President’s commitment to the rule of law,” the ANC said.

The statement further highlighted that the government's response to such allegations demonstrates its resolve to confront corruption and criminal conduct without regard to status or position. “It is a clear demonstration of the seriousness with which the President and government respond to allegations of corruption and criminal conduct, regardless of who is involved,” it added.

The suspension comes in response to explosive claims by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who has accused Mchunu of obstructing police operations, dissolving a unit focused on political killings, and maintaining connections with organized crime groups in the province.

In a decisive move, President Ramaphosa not only placed Mchunu on leave but also announced the formation of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry. The commission, to be chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, will investigate the serious allegations that have caused a stir within both political and security circles.

Mchunu has already appeared before the ANC’s Integrity Commission as part of the party's internal review process. He is one of three high-ranking members currently under scrutiny. Although the commission's findings have not been released publicly, the development marks a notable step in the ANC’s broader efforts to address internal misconduct.
