Chinese Court Imprisons Japanese Man

(MENAFN) A judicial body in China handed down a prison term of three years and six months to a Japanese citizen on Wednesday for charges related to espionage, as stated by the Japanese embassy located in Beijing.

The ruling came from the No. 2 Intermediate People's Court in the Chinese capital, which found the individual—an employee of the Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma Inc.—guilty of involvement in spying activities.

This information was conveyed to the media by Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi, according to a news agency.

"This is extremely regrettable," Kanasugi remarked.

He further noted that Japanese authorities would persist in urging for the individual’s release “at the earliest and support him.”

The man had been taken into custody in March 2023, shortly before he was due to return to Japan.

Later, he was officially arrested in October of the same year and formally charged in August 2024.
