China urges SCO to have stronger unity, collaboration
During a meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers in Tianjin, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of the organization’s founding principles—often referred to as the "Shanghai Spirit"—which are based on mutual trust, equality, consultation, and shared benefit. These values, he argued, are essential for navigating a world facing increasing geopolitical instability and economic uncertainty.
“The world is becoming more multipolar and economic globalization is deepening, and the global South is growing significantly. At the same time, hegemony and power are going against the trend, protectionism is surging, and regional conflicts are emerging one after another,” Wang stated.
He called on member states to reach a broader consensus on advancing the SCO’s development, describing it as a commitment both to history and to future generations. He also highlighted the organization’s transformation over the past 24 years into a central player in ensuring regional peace and progress.
Wang outlined five guiding principles for the SCO’s future: deepening security partnerships, encouraging inclusive development, fostering peaceful neighborly relations, upholding multilateralism, and defending global fairness and justice.
He also announced that the next SCO leaders’ summit will take place in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, with participation expected from more than 20 heads of state and leaders from major international organizations.
In preparation for the summit, the attending foreign ministers signed a series of key resolutions.
