Iran Rejects Accusations of Intent to Eliminate Israel
His statement comes about a month after Iran and Israel were involved in an extraordinary exchange of hostilities.
In an interview, Araghchi asserted, “It has never been Iran’s policy to wipe out Israel from the map.”
This remark was made as part of a broader discussion on Iran’s regional policies and relations.
Despite rejecting the notion of Iran aiming to eliminate Israel, Araghchi reaffirmed Tehran’s backing of armed pro-Palestinian movements.
“We believe that these groups – Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis – are fighting for a just cause. We have always supported them, politically and in other ways,” he stated.
Araghchi further contended that American-made weaponry enables Israel to “kill people” in Palestine and elsewhere, underscoring Iran’s disapproval of U.S. military aid to Tel Aviv.
Addressing another contentious topic, Araghchi dismissed reports that Iran had plotted to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump.
He clarified that the commonly heard slogan ‘death to America’ is directed at “the hegemonic policies of the United States, not the people of the United States.”
He emphasized the need to distinguish between radical voices within the country and Iran’s formal governmental positions.
Iran, which maintains no diplomatic relationship with Washington, continues to regard Israel as an unlawful state.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reiterated this stance in a 2023 post on his English-language X account: “Never doubt that the hostile, usurper Zionist regime will be wiped off the world’s map one day. God willing, this is a definite part of the future.”
Reacting to these remarks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled them a national security threat, prompting air raids during last month’s 12-day confrontation with Iran.
