Egypt Releases Inmates After Presidential Clemency

(MENAFN) Egypt’s Ministry of Interior revealed on Wednesday that a total of 1,056 inmates have been set free in accordance with a presidential clemency order.

According to the ministry, this initiative aligns with a directive from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, aimed at granting amnesty for “the remainder of sentences for certain convicted individuals who meet the conditions for amnesty, on the occasion of the anniversary of the July 23, 1952 revolution.”

This historical event marked the termination of the country’s monarchy.

To facilitate the process, the ministry established evaluation panels tasked with reviewing prisoners' records across various detention centers nationwide.

The objective was to identify individuals who satisfied the requirements for early release under the presidential order.

After thorough examinations, the panels determined that “the decision applies to 1,056 inmates who qualify for early release.”

However, the announcement did not elaborate on the specific qualifications used to determine eligibility.

The Interior Ministry also refrained from revealing the overall number of incarcerated individuals in Egypt.

Nonetheless, presidential pardons continue to be a recurring practice in the country, typically issued during notable national occasions.
