Syria moves more than five hundred individuals from Suwayda to Daraa
Officials have not yet disclosed the total number of civilians relocated from Suwayda so far.
On Tuesday, Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba described the evacuation as temporary, assuring that all civilians will be returned once stability is reestablished.
"Several families from various communities in Suwayda were evacuated, many of whom had been held hostage or kidnapped by armed gangs,” al-Baba told Anadolu.
The evacuations follow violent clashes on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze groups in Suwayda. The unrest intensified with Israeli airstrikes targeting Syrian military sites and infrastructure, including areas around the capital, Damascus.
While Israel justified its air attacks as measures to protect Druze communities, many Druze leaders within Syria have rejected foreign involvement and reaffirmed their loyalty to a united Syrian state.
A ceasefire was declared on Saturday.
Since the removal of former leader Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024, the new Syrian government has been focusing on restoring nationwide order.
