Egyptian presidential pardon releases one thousand inmates
The ministry stated that the decision was in line with an initiative to pardon the remainder of prison sentences for certain inmates who met specific conditions for amnesty. The move coincided with the anniversary of the July 23, 1952 revolution, which led to the abolition of Egypt’s monarchy.
To facilitate the process, review committees were formed to assess prisoner files nationwide and identify those eligible for early release under the terms of the pardon.
The ministry confirmed that “the decision applies to 1,056 inmates who qualify for early release,” though it did not provide further clarification on the criteria used to determine eligibility.
While the total number of inmates in Egypt remains undisclosed, such presidential pardons are granted on a regular basis.
