Turkish FM states Russia, Ukraine approve leaders’ summit

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky have agreed in principle to hold a face-to-face summit, according to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. His statement followed a new round of peace talks between the two nations held in Istanbul, with Türkiye acting as a mediator.

The third round of direct negotiations took place on Wednesday, focusing largely on humanitarian issues. While a ceasefire remains elusive, both sides agreed to continue exchanging prisoners of war and civilians.

Speaking to Turkish broadcaster NTV on Friday, Fidan said the parties discussed potential conditions for a leaders’ meeting and agreed in principle to a summit in Türkiye. He emphasized that each diplomatic advance helps bring the conflict closer to resolution.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the possibility of a Putin-Zelensky meeting, but said it should only occur after substantial progress has been made in broader peace negotiations. He added that such a summit is “unlikely” to take place within the next month.

Russia continues to support diplomatic efforts but insists any resolution must address what it considers the root causes of the war and its national security concerns.

Zelensky has consistently called for direct talks with Putin, and Ukraine’s delegation again pushed for a one-on-one summit during this week’s negotiations in Istanbul. U.S. President Donald Trump has also endorsed the idea as part of efforts to broker peace. While Moscow hasn’t dismissed the proposal outright, it maintains that a solid foundation must be established first.

Russia has questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy due to the expiration of his term in May 2024. Zelensky has postponed elections under martial law, a move criticized by Moscow, which argues that any agreements he signs may be legally challenged. The Kremlin is demanding that martial law be lifted and new elections held within 100 days as part of any long-term ceasefire arrangement.
