Powerful Magnitude Quake Hits Russian Far East

(MENAFN) A 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook Russia’s far eastern region at 6:37 am local time Saturday (0237 GMT), as reported by the United States Geological Survey.

The agency identified the quake’s epicenter as being off the shoreline near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative hub of Kamchatka Krai, Russia, occurring at a depth of 39.5 kilometers (24.5 miles).

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center cautioned that "hazardous" waves could arise along coastlines within 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the epicenter.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is home to the Russian Navy’s Rybachiy submarine facility and the air force’s Yelizovo airbase.

So far, no casualties or damage have been reported.

Russian officials have issued a tsunami alert for the Kamchatka coast, placing emergency services on heightened alert and advising residents to avoid tsunami-vulnerable areas such as beaches.

On July 30, the region experienced its most powerful earthquake ever recorded, registering at 8.8 magnitude, with Russian researchers documenting over 100 aftershocks exceeding 5.0 magnitude following the initial quake.
