Germany Names New Head of Domestic Intelligence Agency
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is anticipated to make the official announcement on Monday, according to a public broadcaster, while the federal Cabinet is expected to ratify the appointment on Wednesday.
Selen, 53, was born in Istanbul and relocated to Germany with his family at the age of four.
A specialist in counterterrorism, he has held the position of vice president at the BfV since January 2019 and is recognized for his knowledge of international terrorism and religious extremism.
After earning his law degree from the University of Cologne, Selen began his career in security in 2000 at the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).
Between 2006 and 2009, he led the "Foreign Terrorism and Foreign Extremism" division at the Federal Ministry of the Interior before joining the BfV.
His predecessor, Thomas Haldenwang, stepped down in November 2024 to run for a parliamentary position with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats (CDU). However, Haldenwang’s political aspirations were cut short after he did not secure a seat in the February general elections.
