Venezuela's Attorney General Tarek Saab Announces Resignation
National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez Gomez made the announcement during a parliamentary session aired on a state broadcaster, confirming he had received "two letters" containing the resignations of both officials — each of whom had been ratified just months earlier, in October 2024, for a seven-year term set to run through 2031.
Saab, who commanded sweeping authority as the nation's chief prosecutor since 2017, exits the post defined largely by his fierce allegiance to the outgoing government. He had been a vocal defender of former President Nicolás Maduro, who was seized in a U.S. military operation on Jan. 3 — an arrest Saab repeatedly condemned as a "criminal incursion" and a blatant violation of international law.
A trained lawyer who fashioned himself a champion of human rights, Saab's political career spanned decades — from serving as a deputy to the 1999 National Constituent Assembly, to governing Anzoátegui state, to his role as Ombudsman. Yet his legacy remains deeply contested. He has faced U.S. sanctions since 2017 over alleged human rights violations, with opposition figures routinely accusing him of ignoring state-sponsored violence.
In what would prove to be among his final official acts, Saab threw his support behind a newly enacted Amnesty Law, calling it the end of an "important historical cycle" and framing it as an essential mechanism for "healing wounds" left by years of political strife.
Rodriguez Gomez cautioned that no deputy prosecutor is currently in place to assume the role, signaling that the National Assembly must swiftly install "temporary managers" over both the Prosecutor's Office and the Ombudsman's Office while a formal Nominations Committee undertakes the lengthier process of identifying permanent successors.
