UK PM, Omani Sultan Review US-Iran Talks, Strait of Hormuz Situation

(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq held a phone conversation on Sunday, during which they discussed the recent US-Iran talks in Islamabad and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In the call, the two leaders highlighted the importance of continuing the ceasefire and urged all parties to avoid further escalation. According to Starmer’s office, they stressed the need for progress in the peace talks initiated in Pakistan on Saturday.

Starmer also provided an update on the UK's efforts to restore safe shipping routes in the region.

Following recent discussions led by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and British military officials, partners are working toward ensuring long-term freedom of navigation.

Additionally, Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Oman’s security and shared insights on Ukraine’s role in the region, particularly in drone technology, which has been vital amid escalating tensions. He noted that while Ukraine’s expertise has been crucial, Russia’s support for Iran’s aggression remains a concern.

The US-Iran talks, considered the most significant engagement since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, failed to produce a breakthrough in resolving the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, which began on February 28. Pakistan had brokered a two-week ceasefire earlier this week.
