UN Urges Extension of US–Iran Ceasefire as Deadline Approaches
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Secretary-General António Guterres and his envoy have maintained ongoing communications with parties involved in the conflict as well as regional actors.
He said the UN’s “firm hope” is that dialogue between Washington and Tehran resumes, the ceasefire is prolonged, and diplomatic efforts are fully implemented.
The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions following military strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iran earlier this year, which were followed by Iranian retaliatory actions targeting Israeli territory and sites hosting US forces.
A two-week ceasefire agreement brokered earlier in April was arranged following mediation efforts, with initial peace talks held in Pakistan. A second round of discussions is expected later this week as the deadline approaches.
The UN has repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic channels to prevent further escalation and stabilize the situation in the region.
