UK, France to Convene Meeting to Plot Hormuz Strait Reopening Strategy

(MENAFN) Britain and France are convening a two-day conference of military planners drawn from more than 30 countries this week to forge a coordinated operational blueprint for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil and gas flows.

The summit opens Wednesday at the UK's Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, North London, with military experts expected to address force deployment, command and control structures, and overall capability requirements for a potential maritime operation.

According to an official statement, the goal is to translate existing diplomatic frameworks into an actionable military plan, ready for implementation once a sustainable ceasefire creates the conditions for safe passage through the strait.

Tehran announced curbs on strait navigation on March 2, days after US and Israeli forces struck Iran on February 28. Diplomatic momentum has since gained ground — Pakistan brokered a 14-day ceasefire on April 8 and hosted US-Iran talks on April 11-12. Trump said Tuesday that Washington would extend its ceasefire with Iran to allow Tehran additional time to formulate a unified negotiating position, following a formal request from Pakistani officials. Further talks remain in progress, though significant uncertainty persists.
