UN Warns of Rising Tensions in Lebanon After Israeli Military Operations

(MENAFN) The United Nations on Monday highlighted what it described as a “volatile” security situation in Lebanon, reporting intensified Israeli military operations in the country’s south over the weekend.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said during a press briefing that the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) observed significant Israeli activity, including what he described as extensive airstrikes near several southern villages, alongside ongoing naval operations off the coast of Naqoura.

“Over the weekend, UNIFIL observed intensive IDF activity, including extensive airstrikes near a number of villages in the south, as well as continued naval activity off the coast of Naqoura,” said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric during a news conference.

He also noted that on Friday, Israeli tanks obstructed roads during UNIFIL patrols near Al Bayyadah, limiting the movement of peacekeepers in the area.

In another incident, Dujarric said Israeli forces carried out machine gun fire that affected a UNIFIL position near At-Tiri in the Bint Jbeil district, with one round reportedly hitting a vehicle inside the compound.

“Peacekeepers must never be targeted, and their safety and security must be guaranteed at all times,” he said.
