China's Tianzhou-9 Cargo Craft Returns to Earth Atmosphere

(MENAFN) China's Tianzhou-9 cargo spacecraft plunged back into Earth's atmosphere Thursday in a controlled re-entry, state-run media reported, marking the end of the vessel's mission to the country's orbiting space station.

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) confirmed the spacecraft pierced the atmosphere at 7:49 a.m. local time — 2349 GMT Wednesday — with residual debris that survived atmospheric ablation descending into pre-designated safe waters.

Tianzhou-9 had been launched last year loaded with critical mission supplies, including astronaut consumables, propellant and experimental equipment bound for the Tiangong space station. After completing its resupply duties, the uncrewed freighter detached from Tiangong on Wednesday, transitioning into a brief independent flight phase before beginning its fiery descent.

The mission underscores Beijing's steady drumbeat of activity aboard Tiangong as China advances its long-term ambitions in human spaceflight and low-Earth orbit operations.
