Israeli Troops Raid Ramallah, Enter Al Jazeera Office in West Bank

(MENAFN) According to reports, Israeli forces carried out a raid in the central West Bank city of Ramallah early Tuesday, storming the local office of Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera.

Witnesses told a media outlet that an Israeli military unit entered central Ramallah and raided the media office located in Manara Square. They said troops posted a renewed order enforcing the office’s closure and used tear gas and stun grenades in the surrounding area.

The operation also included tightened military restrictions at the northern entrances of Ramallah, with several main roads closed for hours, leading to traffic congestion and disruptions in Palestinian movement, according to witnesses.

The closure of Al Jazeera’s office was initially approved by the Israeli government on May 5, 2024, for a 45-day period based on a proposal from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi. The order has reportedly been extended multiple times since then.

The broader situation in the occupied West Bank has seen a sharp increase in Israeli military raids and settler-related attacks since October 2023. According to Palestinian official figures, this period has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,154 Palestinians, around 11,750 injuries, and nearly 22,000 arrests.
