The closure of Al Jazeera’s office was initially approved by the Israeli government on May 5, 2024, for a 45-day period based on a proposal from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi. The order has reportedly been extended multiple times since then.
The broader situation in the occupied West Bank has seen a sharp increase in Israeli military raids and settler-related attacks since October 2023. According to Palestinian official figures, this period has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,154 Palestinians, around 11,750 injuries, and nearly 22,000 arrests.
