Under the arrangement, the Dominican Republic will receive a limited number of deportees who do not have criminal records. The policy explicitly excludes Haitian nationals and unaccompanied minors.
The Dominican government said the program will be financially supported by the United States to ensure appropriate conditions during temporary stays and to facilitate eventual repatriation to countries of origin.
Officials from both countries are also working on strengthening border and airport security through expanded use of biometric systems and upgraded monitoring technologies at key entry points.
As part of broader security commitments, the Dominican government has also designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanon’s Hezbollah as terrorist organizations, according to reports.
The “Shield of the Americas” initiative, launched in March under US President Donald Trump, reportedly includes 17 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, among them Argentina, El Salvador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Honduras, Chile, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.
